Alternative NRL Round 17 Tips Method – Sonny Bill Williams

If you are like us, and spend too much time on NRL tipping, only to get a lousy three or four correct, then we offer you our Alternative NRL Round 17 Tips.

Perhaps you could just follow an expert’s tips, but what’s the fun in that.

And instead of allowing the competition admin to give you the away teams for when you don’t care about who you tip, why not take on board our weekly Alternative NRL Tipping method?

Each week there will be a new theme, and occasionally it will have nothing to do with rugby league. Just the way we like it.

This week’s Alternative NRL Round Tips are all about Sonny Bill Williams, as this NRL Round 17 is going to end being. Fox Sports have already declared an SBW-Cam. Sounds grape.

How do you base tips around SBW? Well find out the method behind the madness below.

Your Alternative NRL Round 17 Tipping guide awaits.

Alternative NRL Round 17 Tips – Teams v Sonny Bill Williams

Here are the Alternative NRL Round 17 Tipping selections you need.

METHOD

So since this weekend will have a heavy SBW focus, why not get every team’s winning % against sides with SBW.

The better the winning % against SBW in the past, the more likely they will be excited by the big man’s return and win this weekend.

The above does point out one interesting stat, that the Dragons have never beaten a side with SBW in it.

Season Progress:

R4 – Full Moon – 4/8
R5 – Better Coaching Record  – 6/8
R6 – Neutral Ground Performance – 4/8
R7 – Distance from Melbourne – 4/8
R8 – Happiness – 5/8
R9 – Referee Bias
R16 – Coach Longevity – 5/8

NRL Round 17 Best of Stats

Tips involving SBW not enough?

If you like barely interesting stats, here’s the pick of our favourites for all of the games this weekend.

  • Broncos have lost 11 of their last 13 matches on a Thursday, and seven of their last eight v Sydney sides. The Panthers have won their last four Thursday games and seven of their last eight.
  • Cronulla have won six from six games against Qld/NZ teams this season. At a decent average for and against too – 34 points for and 15 against. Their record v NSW teams is much worse – three wins from nine games.
  • Melbourne have an 84.4% winning rate over Souths since 1998, which is almost 10% clear of the next most dominated match H2H. Interestingly, Melbourne have six of the top nine (v North Qld 75%, v Penrith 74%, v Gold Coast 74%, v St George Illawarra 73%, v Brisbane 73%).
  • Gold Coast have won just three games on a Saturday in the past three season (2018-2020) from 28 games. Only one of those wins was outside of Qld. Happily it was against the Bulldogs.
  • Manly hold a 12-3 for games north of Sydney Harbour v Wests Tigers (Brookvale, Central Coast) but it is 10-4 to the Tigers whenever Manly must cross to the southside, but Manly have lost three of their four home games at Brookvale since being allowed to return there after adopting Gosford temporarily. Again.
  • Canberra have won 75% of their home games against the Roosters since 2005. And they are unbeaten in two games since 2005 at home to the Roosters on a Saturday. The Roosters scored 20 points in both games. Canberra’s recent games follow a pattern – most recent game first – WWWLWWWL. So a loss is surely due.
  • The Eels have only lost two of their last 14 games against non-Sydney sides. They have also won the last ten matches at home against non-Sydney sides.
  • Of the 12 games played between NQ and the Dragons in Townsville, ten of them have been on a Saturday. This will be the first Sunday game against the Dragons in Townsville. In fact, North Queensland have only ever played 8 games at home on a Sunday since 1998. Their record is 50-50.
