Formula camouflaged a second grand prix at Silverstone in two two weekends by giving it the fancy title of the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix. Whilst Sunday’s race won’t be classed in the top 70. 150 or 200 races of all time, it had the occaisonal piece of interest to give those dedicated F1 fans something to look forward to for the rest of the season. Thinking of those fans, we offer up the belated 2020 70th Anniversary Grand Prix Result Review.
Max Verstappen surprised a lot by winning a race in something other than a Mercedes, but was he the best driver on the day? And what is the quickest way of finding out what happened in between? For all that and a fraction more, our 2020 70th Anniversary Grand Prix result review is here.
In the big review, we include a quick summary of the on track action, rate the race and we also work out who the best and worst of the race was, so we can assign points to our overall 2020 Driver of the year.
2020 70th Anniversary Grand Prix Result – THE LAPS THAT MATTERED
Didn’t see the race live? Don’t have time to watch the whole race? Well here are the top ten laps where stuff happened. Normally it is five, so you know it was a good race if there’s ten.
Lap 1 – Nico Hulkenberg loses out to Max Verstappen at the start, further back in the field Vettel’s woeful season continues as he spins after a few corners. He rejoins the track in last place. Ricciardo loses out to Lance Stroll. The Mercedes race for a little bit before settling down as per grid.
Lap 6 – Bottas in tyre trouble already according to car radio, a preview of some action to come like last week.
Lap 8 – Red Bull’s Alex Albon pits for new tyres and drops to last. He is the first to drop the qualifying tyres off.
ORDER – BOT, HAM, VER, HUL, STR, RIC, GAS, NOR, LEC, SAI
Lap 13 – Verstappen (on Hard tyres) has closed in on Lewis Hamilton, (on Medium tyres) and is right on his tail – less than half a second. Bottas pits from the lead, comes out 6th. Hamilton pits a lap later and comes out behind Bottas, and Charles Leclerc. Verstappen is now 11 seconds in front from Stroll.
Lap 21 – Most of the front runners have now pitted, except for Verstappen and Sainz.
ORDER – VER, BOT, HAM, SAI, HUL, STR, OCO, RIC, VET, LEC
Lap 27 – Verstappen pits from the lead, and temporarily comes out behind Bottas. A few corners later, he is past and back into the lead. The Red Bull driver has taken on Medium tyres.
ORDER – VER, BOT, HAM, HUL, STR, LEC, NOR, ALB, OCO, KVY
Lap 33 – Verstappen and Bottas both pit for new tyres and drop to 2nd and 3rd. Lewis Hamilton leads for the time being, but not happy with the car. And rightly so, his tyres look shithouse.
Lap 40 – It appears that Mercedes are keeping Hamilton on those used tyres to try and do a one stop strategy. With 12 laps to go, he leads Verstappen by just under 10 seconds.
ORDER – HAM, VER, BOT, LEC, HUL, STR, ALB, OCO, NOR, KVY
Lap 42 – Na, Lewis Hamilton pits, he loses lead to Verstappen and drops to fourth, also behind Bottas and Leclerc.
Lap 46 – Hamilton overtakes Leclerc for third. Hulkenberg pits for new tyres. Hamilton is behind Bottas by 9 seconds and a further 5 seconds to Verstappen with six laps to go.
Lap 50 – Hamilton overtakes Bottas for second.
Lap 52 – Max Verstappen wins for Red Bull. Mercedes duo are next, and Charles Leclerc drags the Ferrari up to fourth somehow, his team mate ends the race in 12th.
2020 70th Anniversary Grand Prix – RACE RATING
We rate the 2020 British F1 Grand Prix so we know which races to go back and watch in the off season.
SEASON IMPORTANCE – 7/10
Another Grand Prix at the same track, but a different winner. And does this mean Red Bull have sorted their issues, and they are ready to really take the fight to the Silver Arrows for the season. At a minimum for the jam packed schedule ahead, it means there’s a chink in the Mercedes armour.
ON TRACK ACTION – 4/10
Not much action throughout. A little bit of position swapping on the first lap, and not a great more at the front on track.
Alex Albon led the overtaking in the midfield for some distraction.
After last weekend’s tyre troubles, most teams went conservative, reducing the on track action.
At least it was a different car at the front taking it easy.
ENDING 4 / 10
With Max Verstappen cruising out in front, it came down to the Mercedes duo to provide the late race excitement. Which lasted for a couple of laps.
OVERALL RATING 15 / 30
Second race syndrome. The downside of two races in consecutive weekends at the same track. At least there was a non Mercedes win.

2020 70th Anniversary Grand Prix Result – Great & Grape
Here we go through the field and highlight the three drivers we think deserve a little extra love, and one driver whose had the weekend of all.
These points get added to our Driver of the Season. 3-2-1 for the Great and minus one point for the Grapest races.
It used to be called the good, bad and ugly, but everyone is using that now.
THE GREAT – 1. Max Verstappen
A win was good enough, but he and his team took the risk in qualifying and he did the job on both days and were richly deserved om the Sunday. His racecraft is improving worryingly for his opponents, as is the Red bull Honda package.
THE GREAT – 2. Charles Leclerc
Dragging the Ferrari home in fourth was another great race. Has well and truly seen off Vettel into retirement, and his one stop strategy played out into another big haul of points.
THE GREAT – 3. Nico Hulkenberg
OK, so the race didn’t pan out as well as most were hoping for, but his job on the Saturday to qualify third was some piece of work. One that deserves one more chance in F1. Even if it is in a Pink Mercedes.
HONOURABLE MENTIONS
Alex Albon – for providing some late race overtaking. Although, his weekend up to Sunday had him much closer to the grape side of things.
THE GRAPE – 1. Sebastian Vettel
12th place isn’t quite good enough when you have a Ferrari, especially when you are a multiple World Champion.
it’s a relationship that just needs to end.
DIS-HONOURABLE MENTIONS
Daniel Ricciardo – He got Australians fans hyped for a move away from mediocrity after qualifying, but Sunday brought no points and a drive as disappointing as some of Mark Webber’s finest.
