2020 Hungarian F1 Grand Prix Result – THE LAPS THAT MATTERED
Didn’t see the race live? Don’t have time to watch the whole race? Well here are the top ten laps where stuff happened. Normally it is five, so you know it was a good race if there’s ten.
Lap 0 – Track is slightly wet but it is not raining. Still dangerous though, as Verstappen crashes at Turn 12 on his way to the grid. Front wing and suspension damaged, and somehow the Red Bull team got it changed over. Haas amazed most by starting on full wet tyres but quickly changed to slicks. Kvyat for AlphaTauri went brave on slicks.
Lap 1 – Bottas appeared to jump the start, and it didn’t help as he dropped down the order before the first corner. Stroll assumed second place, and the Ferraris got off the line well. Verstappen
Lap 2 – Bottas and Leclerc pits for dry tyres.
Lap 3 – Hamilton, Stroll and Vettel + others pit for dry tyres. Vettel is held up in the pit lane by traffic.
Lap 6 – All the teams have changed to dry tyres now, and the big winners were Haas, who have landed in 3rd and 4th place. Verstappen is another winner jumping up to second and ahead of all major competitors except Lewis Hamilton leading (by 7 seconds)
Order is HAM, VER, MAG, GRO, STR, LEC, BOT, VET, ALB, PER
Lap 10 – Bottas > Leclerc – eventually gets it done after a few false starts. Much like his effort off the grid.
Lap 18 – Albon > Leclerc + Vettel Sniffing around now and gets past the next lap. Bottas has got past Magnussen by now.
Lap 20 – TV Cameras looking to the sky – order is HAM, VER, STR, Bot, MAG, GRO, ALB, VET, LEC, PER
Lap 32 – Drivers complaining about the state of their tyres, but teams waiting for potential rain.
Order is HAM, VER, STR, BOT, MAG, ALB, PER, GRO, RIC, SAI
Lap 35 – Front runners start to pit. Hint of rain starting to fall. Hamilton pits on Lap 38.
Lap 42 – Most of the front runners have pit by now, Ricciardo staying out hope ing for rain.
Order is HAM, VER, BOT, STR, RIC, VET, ALB, PER, MAG, LEC.
Lap 58 – Not much happening, but time for an order update….
Order is HAM, VER, BOT, STR, VET, ALB, PER, RIC, MAG, LEC.
Lap 70 – Bottas catching Verstappen for second place.
2020 Hungarian F1 Grand Prix – RACE RATING
We rate the 2020 Hungarian F1 Grand Prix so we know which races to go back and watch in the off season.
SEASON IMPORTANCE – 7/10
General points of interest for the season so far were highlighted again at this race. Mercedes are still flying, the Pink Mercedes aka Racing Point are almost second best car but a Renault doubled down protest looming. Red Bull surprisingly not as strong at Hungary as they hoped. And Ferrari still look awful.
ON TRACK ACTION – 5/10
Almost more on track action before the start of this Grand Prix than some other races. Mostly at Barcelona.
There was a little on track action, usually because cars had wrong tyres on at the wrong time.
That potential rain just never came….
ENDING 3 / 10
Nothing like the two previous races, it was a reasonably dull finish ti a Grand Prix. Bottas v Verstappen had mild interest.
OVERALL RATING 15 / 30
The dullest Grand Prix for the year, with just enough mild interest to keep those in Australia/Pacific to stay awake.
RACE RATINGS SO FAR
Austrian Grand Prix – 28/30
Styrian Grand Prix – 23/30
2020 Hungarian F1 Grand Prix Result – Great & Grape
Here we go through the field and highlight the three drivers we think deserve a little extra love, and one driver whose had the weekend of all.
These points get added to our Driver of the Season.
It used to be called the good, bad and ugly, but everyone is using that now.
THE GREAT – 1. Lewis Hamilton
His pole lap on Saturday was a sign of the dominance ahead, and he delivered on race day yet again. Never looked like being headed, just as he is heading for another world title. He would be worthy of breaking Michael Schumacher’s record.
THE GREAT – 2. Max Verstappen
A spin before the start of the race had him marked for the Grape of the race. But after some super human effort by the Red Bull team to get Verstappen’s car ready to race, the Dutchman did them justice by finishing second, albeit a long way behind. He held off a much fasted Bottas well into the end. Good result in car that is rumoured to be not quite as good
THE GREAT – 3. Lance Stroll
He may well have a pink Mercedes, but he did well to stay among the front runners throughout the race. Fast shaking the pay driver tag he inherited when his career started at Williams.
HONOURABLE MENTIONS
Valterri Bottas – good qualifying, but stuffed his race with a near jump start. Ended up finishing third and nearly caught Verstappen at the end. Has best car though.
Daniel Ricciardo – for looking half competitive. Which is 25% more than usual.
THE GRAPE – 1. George Russell/Nicholas Latifi
A little harsh, but this was based on expectations of a breakthrough for Williams at Hungary. Both cars into Q2 was a good start, if a little disappointing for Russell who looked up for a Q3 berth. The end result was the two cars at the back and another nothing race. With seats running out Russell is running out of time to turn his considerable talent into a race winning drive.

Top 5 Pre Grid Moments 2020 Hungarian F1 Grand Prix Result – Quirks
With Max Verstappen’s crash on his way to the grid, we cast our minds back to the best of those who slipped up before the race started.
1991 San Marino GP – Alain Prost spins off on the warm up lap at one of Ferrari home races.
2005 – Christijan Albers and Michael Schumacher’s
1997 – Ralf Schumacher spins off and destroys Jordan on his way to the grid on a wet Belgian GP Sunday.
1997 – A technicality here, but Minardi driver Ukyo Katayama spun on the curved pit straight at the British GP in 1997 at Silverstone. Being a Minardi driver, Katayama was at the back of the grid, but his spin was before he crossed the start line, making some ponders whether he technically started the race.
1989 – A wet Canadian GP for 1989, and two savvy drivers – Nigel Mansell and Alessandro Nannini thought they would discard their wet tyres for slicks. Got idea, but we’ll never know how that ended. As both drivers got to the end of pitlane only to see no marshall stopping them, nor a light saying stop. So they ventured out onto the track before th race had actually started. Both cars were disqualified.
