Premier League Week 17 Barely Interesting Stats
SALAH SCORES – LIVERPOOL WINS
Of course combining one of the Premier League’s most prolific goal scorers and the fact that Liverpool rarely lose games makes this Salah stat a little less interesting, but the number explained below are still impressive.
For the last 26 times, stretching back to the final game of 17-18, when Mo Salah scored, Liverpool wins. It has happened seven times this season and 18 in the 2019. Going back to the two and a half Liverpool seasons, they have only lost once when Mo Salah has scored.
For the record, Salah really seems to enjoy playing Watford, it is now 8 goals and 2 assists in 5 games.
CHELSEA STILL POINTLESS AFTER GOING BEHIND – LEICESTER NOW BEST AT RECOVERING
Only two teams have failed to pick up a point this season after going behind – Chelsea and Norwich – and they once again confirmed that on Saturday after falling to Bournemouth at home 1-0. The sixth time they have fallen behind this season.
It means they have lost three in four games against lower table strugglers, after playing West Ham and Everton into form recently, and allowed the team (Bournemouth) with the longest losing streak for the season so far to find winning ways.
On a positive note for this category on the weekend, Leicester came from behind to get a point at home to Norwich, which takes them to the top for points won from losing positions.
PUKKI HAS SCORED AGAINST ALL OF THE CURRENT TOP FOUR
The Pukki party has returned, bringing smiles to both, especially those canny FPL players who hung onto him against all logic in his dry run.
After scoring in four of his first five games, there was a lean spell as Norwich suffered with injuries. But since the team’s playing stocks are getting refilled, so has the scoring boots of Pukki.
Three goals in his last four shows he is back, and he probably should have had a second goal against Leicester.
The headline though is the most interesting, he has scored against all of the top four so far this season, including goals at Liverpool and Leicester.
Hopefully the party continues to rage.
BURNLEY’S WINNING WAYS
Two interesting things in the fallout of Burnley’s win over Newcastle.
Firstly, they are very reliable at home against sides lower than them. In fact, they have beaten every side that visits Turf Moor this season.
Secondly, Burnley prefer to play against teams whose name starts with the second half of the alphabet. Their record against A to Z is one win in nine games, but for N to Z it is five wins in eight. Although this is a misleading stat, as most of the big six and Leicester are in the front half of the alphabet.
HALLER SCORES
Good to see big summer signing Sebastien Haller scoring against Southampton, but the goals are mostly coming from teams below West Ham, which is a worry given the lack of teams lower than West Ham at times.
Haller has scored against the bottom three sides, and Crystal Palace being the only high flying exception. Something to note before contemplating bring him into your FPL team.
MANDATORY IPSWICH TOWN ARE THE GREATEST PROMOTED SIDE IN RECENT HISTORY
Sheffield United are doing an incredible job, they were as high as fifth after their win over Aston Villa on Saturday, but as an Ipswich Town fan holding onto whatever glory we produce, we’d still like to remind those of just how good that Ispwich Town side went in their promotion season. As we can barely believe it happened now.
After 17 games Sheffield United lie 7th, with 25 points, and a for and against of 21-16.
At the same stage of 17 games, Ipswich were heading to Christmas in 3rd place, with 30 points, and a for and against of 24-17.
After a loss in League One at home to Bristol Rovers, it is nice to reflect of Ipswich’s good times.
QUICK HITS
The 2-0 win from Liverpool was the smallest since home win over Watford since 15/16
Norwich have now scored in their last three away games, which is a much better return than the one goal in their first six away games.
When Burnley keep a clean sheet they win. So if they concede throw way those winning bets. At the moment.
That’s three losses in four at home to West Ham for Southampton.
Arsenal have now not scored in the last four home games to Manchester City. They have lost 3-0, 2-0, 3-0, 3-0.
Manchester United have won just one games at home against sides below them. Throw in a 1-1 draw against Rochdale in the League Cup too.
The last three times Mason Greenwood has scored for the Red Devils, the game has ended in a score draw.
Two of the season’s longest current streaks ended this weekend, Leicester’s winning, Bournemouth’s losing streak were season highs, and Wolves unbeaten streak was second best for the season.
