Premier League Week 16 Best & Blurst
BEST PERFORMANCE
SPURS v Burnley
Five goals and first clean sheet under Jose Mourinho. That top four looks closer than ever.
BEST GAME
LEICESTER v ASTON VILLA
Enough action to genuinely be 7-4, but still enough Leicester to be a great view.
DISAPPOINTMENT OF THE WEEK
CHELSEA – three losses in four now, as perhaps they are going back to more what you’d expect.
LIVERPOOL ROTATION – Mane and TAA on the bench. Ouch say the FPL player.
SURPRISE OF THE WEEK
SHEFFIELD UNITED’s goal scorers proving anyone can do anything at anytime.
Newcastle not only winning but coming from behind at home.
FAVORUITE BIT OF THE WEEK
Seeing Everton’s caretaker manager going so berserk winning against Chelsea. Nice to see a manager who looks genuinely thrilled with a win.
Premier League Week 16 Barely Interesting Stats
CHELSEA STILL POINTLESS AFTER GOING BEHIND
Only two teams have failed to pick up a point this season after going behind – Chelsea and Norwich – and that remains the case after their loss to Everton.
It means they have lost twice in three games against lower table strugglers, after playing West Ham into form last home game.
BOURNEMOUTH ON A SEASON HIGH LOW
Bournemouth do tend to go through season without being really noticed, so their recent drop in results has gone a little unnoticed with all of the recent sackings.
But the Cherries have now lost five games in a row, which is a season high for any team.
Sadly, their next game is away, and they hold the current longest winless streak away from home too.
HIGH FIVES FOR MOURINHO
A first clean sheet for Jose Mourinho at Spurs this weekend after the Burnley game, but an even rarer five goal haul in the Premier League.
It has only happened 4 times before in the Premier League. All for Chelsea – three in the second stint and once in the original stint.
The last time Mourinho was in charge of a team that scored in the Premier League was in the 14/15 season when Chelsea beat Swansea 5-0 in January 2015.
Mourinho’s stints at Inter Milan and Porto brought five goals twice, but a Real Madrid there were plenty. 27 times across the three seasons Real Madrid scored five goals or more across he League, Copa del Rey, and Champions League.
WOLVES THE DRAWING KINGS OF UK AND EUROPE
Wolves drew with Brighton on Sunday, not a bad result away for them, and a slightly better one for the home side Brighton who are in 12th..
But for all of Wolves’ second best unbeaten streak in the Premier League, they also currently hold a different record.%
Wolves currently have the highest % of draws for the four UK Football leagues, and the other big five leagues in Europe. They have drawn 9 of their 16 games so far at 56%.
Only Coventry City (League One) has a draw % close to Wolves (10 draws from 19 games).
Interestingly, Mainz in the Bundesliga haven’t drawn any of their 14 games.
TOP FORM TOON
Slightly better than Wolves is Newcastle’s recent form.
The Magpies have secured 13 points from their last 6 games, one more than Wolves despite a loss, an sit third in last six form for the Premier League.
They are up to 10th and are just two points from Manchester United in fifth.
Newcastle are also equal third for scoring points after going behind. They have scored 8 points in the league after going behind.
QUICK HITS
The 0-0 draw between Watford and Crystal Palace was the first time in four games that the score didn’t end up 2-1 to someone.
Liverpool have now beaten Bournemouth by a combined 17-0 in their last five league games, and 11-0 at Bournemouth in the last three.
Mo Salah has now scored 7 goals and 1 assists in five games against Bournemouth.
Sheffield United are going well in their first Premier League season in over a decade. But they are still behind Ipswich Town, who at the same stage on 2000/01 were in third spot and had 30 points.
