Intrust Super Cup Predictions Round 23 and Final Round Preview

The regular season is almost over, and with not a great deal left to play for what better time to offer up Intrust Super Cup Predictions Round 23 and Final Round Preview that has little left to play for except anticipation of what looms as one of the great finals series.

Cynics would have raised eyebrows at the extension of the finals series to eight teams this season, and although it hasn’t meant a scrap for the last positions in the top eight, it has meant that some good teams will be playing Intrust Super Cup finals this season, when last year they may have missed out.

The case in point is the in form Redcliffe Dolphins, who are currently seventh. Ironically with a top six, their battle with Tweed Heads for the final top six spot would have been good stuff, but the top eight they are playing for home ground advantage in Week One of the finals.

Second and fourth are up for grabs, but need various results to go in various directions for Wynnum, Burleigh, Townsville and Norths.

Last place is settled in the Capras “favour” for 2019, but the way the Hunters have finished off the season, they are lucky they are four points clear coming into this round.

As ever, Intrust Super’s Brendan O’Farrell as ever has provided his expert opinion on who will win. And we provide our less expert tips for each game as well.

Intrust Super Cup Predictions Round 23 INTRUST SUPER CUP – MINI PREVIEW

Here’s our quick rundown on all things Round 23 Intrust Super Cup than usual. A mini preview to save you time.

EASTS TIGERS v TOWNSVILLE BLACKHAWKS

Saturday 3pm @ Langlands Park

RECENT FORM: Townsville have won nine of their last ten games, with the 2019 standard loss to the Falcons (except for Redcliffe of course) the only blemish. They have beaten both Wynnum and Burleigh in that run. Easts haven’t won since Round 16, with a 38-38 draw in the PNG highlands their only competition points.

WHAT’S TO PLAY FOR? Townsville can finish 2nd if they win and Wynnum and Burleigh lose (although the points turnaround to Burleigh is 121 points). Townsville can also finish fifth with a loss and Norths win. But they are 54 ahead in points difference. Easts will finish 8th regardles, but what about a win to hit the finals running.

WE SAY: Easts Tigers to eventually win the arm wrestle by 2 points with a late try. Something for friend of the website Matt Crowhurst.

TWEED HEAD SEAGULLS v NORTHERN PRIDE

Saturday 4pm @ Piggabeen

RECENT FORM: A four game losing streak not long ago has been forgotten about now with four wins in five to see out the campaign. They have only played one top eight side in that run however, beating the out of form Tigers. Northern Pride beat Easts last weekend, which was their first win after a run of six losses.

WHAT’S TO PLAY FOR? Tweed Heads must win to guarantee sixth spot and a home final. Otherwise a loss will still see them play Redcliffe, but on the other side of the Brisbane River. Northern Pride will finish 12th regardless.

WE SAY: Tweed Heads simply have more to play for and are at the glorious Piggabeen to win by 18 or 20.

REDCLIFFE DOLPHINS v MACKAY CUTTERS

Saturday 6pm @ Dolphin Oval

RECENT FORM: Redcliffe have won eight of their last nine, with the Magpies surprising them in Pittsworth. Their run includes beating all of the top three. Just to emphasise heir form, they have won their past three games by 147-4. That field goal seeming reasonably surplus in the grand scheme of things. Mackay have lost three in a row since beating Tweed Heads at Piggabeen, but are usually reasonably competitive in all their matches.

WHAT’S TO PLAY FOR? Redcliffe will finish 6th if they win and Tweed Heads lose. They will know the result by the time they kick off, so interest will rise if the Seagulls Pride is dented at Piggabeen. Mackay can overtake Souths Logan for 10th with a win and Magpies loss. They can also play for the very minor prize of best points difference of non finals teams depending on Ipswich.

WE SAY: If Tweed Heads win prior to the game Redcliffe by 10, if Tweed Heads lose then Redcliffe by 30.

CENTRAL CAPRAS v BURLEIGH BEARS

Saturday 6pm @ Browne Park

RECENT FORM: Central Capras haven’t taken a competition points since a draw in Biloela in June, but they haven’t been thrashed that often either since. They only went down to Norths by 6 points last weekend. Burleigh’s last five games have ended LLWWL, and are probably in the least impressive form of the top four. Their three losses have come against Redcliffe, Townsville and Sunshine Coast.

WHAT’S TO PLAY FOR? Central have sadly already claimed the wooden spoon, so are looking for just their second win of the season. Burleigh can finish between second and fourth. A win won’t guarantee them second, nor will a loss ensure fourth.

WE SAY: Burleigh Bears by enough.

SUNSHINE COAST FALCONS v IPSWICH JETS

Sunday 1:10pm @ Sunshine Coast Stadium

RECENT FORM: The Falcons have lost one game all season, at the end of June. Since then the wins have come regularly, but not many big wins lately, just getting the job done. Their win last weekend at Burleigh was particularly hard fought. Ipswich’s form has been hit and miss as you’d expect from a side about to finish 9th for the season. Their season has been neither great or grape.

WHAT’S TO PLAY FOR? Sunshine Coast wrapped up the minor premiership a few weeks ago, and are playing for records perhaps. It is certainly a far cry from the days where they were smashed every week after Manly’s departure from the NRL alliance. Ipswich Jets are going to finish 9th regardless, but it is Ben Walker’s last game as part of the dynamic coaching duo.

WE SAY: Sunshine Coast by 16 points after hopefully one more glorious display of Walker brothers magic.

WYNNUM SEAGULLS v NORTHS DEVILS

Sunday 2pm @ BMD Kougari

RECENT FORM: Wynnum’s home games have been heavily weighted to the end of the season, which has seen them come into the finals in form, although a four game winning streak was halted in Townsville last weekend. After a Magpie and Falcon inspired blip, Norths have won four in a row heading into the final week. The leg stretching 62-14 win over the Pride an eye catcher.

Might we mention as avid PNG Kumuls fans, we look forward to seeing both team’s PNG superstars in action through the finals and into the World Nines. Gebbie should be some talent at that level.

WHAT’S TO PLAY FOR? Wynnum will finish second with a win, lose at it opens up the top four. They could then finish as low as fourth. Norths too can upset the current top four but need a win and Townsville loss, with a 54 point turnaround. But they will know their fate on Sunday after the Saturday game in Townsville.

WE SAY: Wynnum to win a thrill a minute, point scoring bonanza. Maybe with a length of the field special from Edene Gebbie.

SOUTHS LOGAN MAGPIES v PNG HUNTERS

Sunday 3pm @ Davies Park

RECENT FORM: The Magpies have improved in the second half of the season, but have been hit and miss. They did inflict Redcliffe’s only loss in two months. They still have only won two at home this season, and face the Hunters who they’ve never beaten at Davies Park. The Hunters have had an ordinary season, especially the last half of the season, where they have just a draw to their name since Round 14. They have lost their last two games by 106-4. We were there for the Wynnum games, and only the period where our hero Willie Minoga was on the field did they look even half competitive. Oh well, new coach, new season, and onwards and upwards for 2020.

WHAT’S TO PLAY FOR? Souths Logan can drop to 11th with a loss, and the Hunters are cemented to second last.

WE SAY: If the Hunters lose at Davies Park, then they are truly in trouble. They have never lost there, and with our attendance. Luckily the Magpies home form is not great to balance that out. How about a draw to end the season of 2019 Intrust Super Cup.
