The race has been won and run, and the 2019 Canadian Grand Prix results are confirmed, and as ever our thoughts on the race, and the drivers are here with our Great and Grape of the race.
We feature a few of our thoughts of the race and rate it out of 50, plus the all important Good, Bad and Ugly. Where we assign points for those who had a good race, bad race, and also based on a few other mildly important stats.
Plenty to get through, so straight into the 2019 Canadian Grand Prix Results – Great and Grape.
2019 MONACO GRAND PRIX IN 50 WORDS OR LESS
Not much happened before the Vettel 5 second penalty described later. But after that it was all about Lewis Hamilton trying to win the race on the track, and not solely because of the penalty.
Vettel crossed the line first, but was less than 5 seconds in front so lost his first win of the season. His antics after the race were as much fun as the race.
2019 CANADIAN GRAND PRIX RESULTS – MOMENT OF THE RACE
Sebastian Vettel sliding off the track and rejoining in front for Lewis Hamilton, and dangerously so according to the race stewards. It costs him 5 seconds, and Lewis Hamilton never let him get that far ahead.
2019 CANADIAN GRAND PRIX RESULTS – RACE RATING
Was it a good race? Well here’s our sort of scientific rating out of 50.
SURPRISE – 7/10
The Vettel – Hamilton – 5 second penalty part of the race brought great surprise. But not much else for the rest of the race.
SUSPENSE – 7/10
It was good iewing as Hamilton was chasing down Vettel, despite already knowing about the penalty.
RACING – 3/10
Not much overtaking, with very little positional swapping happening outside of the pitlane.
SIGNIFICANT EVENT – 9/10
You could say that the Hamilton – Vettel incident ensures this category rates highly. It and Vettel’s behaviour afterwards caught the eye of news around the world.
SEASON DEFINING – 8/10
It has certainly set a precedence for potential future penalties. Will future ones be applied more strict than usual or will the backlash of the 5 seconds be enough to turn the FIA off a similar outcome.
TOTAL RACE RATING 34/50
Probably sum it up as great for a Monaco Grand Pix without rain.
2019 CANADIAN GRAND PRIX RESULTS – GREAT or GRAPE
Who was king of the road,? Who was the villain? Who stunk up the place? Who outperformed expectations? Or was just plain unlucky? We split up the best of the best and worst of the worst with Good, Bad and Ugly of the 2019 Canadian Grand Prix results.
THE GREAT
SEBASTIAN VETTEL
Did everything to get his 2019 season back on track, with a Pole Position coming before a great race. But his race win was taken away after he was handed that 5 second penalty by the stewards for rejoining dangerously.
The penalty was harsh? Absolutely. But the whole thing could have been avoided if he stays on track. Sadly, it did show yet another example of Vettel’s errors creeping into his driving at Ferrari.
And the way he carried on at the end of race was woeful and almost unprofessional.
Perhaps he should retire from F1, as per the rumours.
LEWIS HAMILTON
Was slightly outpaced by Vettel all weekend, but got to take full advantage of the German’s debatable 5 second grid. A win is a win.
He was always close enough to maintain that cushion for the win, but unlike other drivers who may have been tempted just to keep the 5 second gap in check, Hamilton tried his best to go for the win outright.
The way he handled after the race, especially with Vettel showed a little class that sometimes gets lost in his public persona, which can be challenging to like.
CHARLES LECLERC
Got the job done, and for a change had no Ferrari BS to worry about. Not far behind the leaders in the end, and hopefully he will get his chance for that first win soon.
MAX VERSTAPPEN
After getting brushed from Q3 due to the timing of Kevin Magnussen’s crash, he eventually started from 9th.
So Verstappen did a fine Dolly Parton, working from 9 to 5. Not quite enough to break into the podium, but good enough for a great point for our Great and Grape from the Canadian Grand Prix.
DANIEL RICCIARDO (Best of the Race)
Perhaps a strange choice as the Best of the Race, but there wasn’t much in it at the very top for great of the race, so we went for the performance as relative to the rest of the season. And given how grape Ricciardo’s season has gone, we give him the best of the 2019 Canadian Grand Prix results.
Taking advantage of big team slip ups is crucial for the next of the best, and Renault and Ricciardo did, with the Aussie not only ending up best of the rest, but ahead of both Red Bulls in qualifying, and Bottas in 4th.
He did all he could in the race with the current Renault, and thankfully it stayed together for a change. All Australians are hoping it is a turnaround point.
LANCE STROLL
After falling out in Q1, the local hero turned it around for the race, scoring points and finishing ahead of his team mate. Ran in 8th for about 30 laps in the middle, ended up 9th which was the maximum given the reliability ahead of the better cars.
ANTONIO GIOVINAZZI
A good weekend for the Italian for the fact that he outqualified his experienced team mate Kimi Raikkonen and beat him in the race. No points from the Canadian GP, but he did run in 10th for a part of the first half of the race.
GEORGE RUSSELL
Did the usual job of outqualifying his team mate again, and then beat him in the race yet again. It may be at the back of the grid where no one cares, but we make sure he gets some of the recognition he deserves.
He made it up to 14th by lap 3, but that was as high as he got as the overall compeditiveness of the William took over. Russell not only beat his team mate home, but finished in front of the Haas of Magnussen.
THE GRAPE
PIERRE GASLY (Grapest Race)
There have been rumours swirling around the F1 underbelly is that Pierra Gasly will be getting the arse from Red Bull, so taking advantage of Max Vertappen failing to make Q3 was critical. So qualifying behind Daniel Ricciardo was not a great start.
The under pressure Red Bull driver didn’t get past Ricciardo off the line, and an early pitstop had him struggling from that point on. He finished eighth behind both Renaults and his team mate who started 9th.
KEVIN MAGNUSSEN
A crash in qualifying hurt his race, and few others races too with the lateness of his induction into the Wall of Champions.
Only ran as high as 13th on lap 13 around pitstop time, but drifted back after his, and a second stop meant e was sandwiched by the Williams cars.
