The Queensland State of Origin team was named today, and aside from the usual banter , there was talk of a Mystery Queensland Origin 21st Player.
Queensland coach Kevin Walters seemed a little shifty on the subject, so perhaps it is such big news that he has to keep it secret for a few more days yet.
So, to ruin his surprise, we offer up a magnificent seven of Mystery Queensland Origin 21st Player possibilities. We anticipate at least one of them will be correct.
Our Magnificent Seven Mystery Queensland Origin 21st Player Possibilities
CAMERON SMITH
The big sensational talk is that the former Queensland captain and part time referee will make a sensational comeback for Queensland, hence the mystery around it.
Queensland are lacking a little bit of big name experience, and there’s hardly a bigger name or more experience than Cameron Smith.
Perhaps the naming of Daly Cherry-Evans as captain is giant smokescreen. The Manly star is really injured, has no intention of playing and Cameron Smith comes in to captain the side and Ben Hunt moves to halfback.
Or not.
BILLY SLATER
Since they have attempted to take Cameron Smith out of representative retirement as per above, can they also try to un-retire Billy Slater.
This seems unlikely, as both Melbourne and Queensland are well covered in the number one.
BEN HUNT
Maybe Kevin Walters can’t really trust Ben Hunt didn’t have the heart to tell him that he wasn’t really part of his Origin line up, and so he is the Mystery Queensland Origin 21st Player and will be replace by Moses Mbye.
JASON TAUMALOLO
A little further left field is that Kevin Walters has been able to do the paperwork, and convince Jason Taumalolo that he can somehow qualify for Queensland,. Maybe the plan is that they are leaving him as a Mystery Queensland Origin 21st Player for the first few days, then blow everyone away with the big announcement.
It would certainly add some extra interest in this year’s State of Origin.
WILLIE MINOGA
If it is good enough to tempt the Tongan superstar into maroon, then why not get PNG Hunters grand final hero Willie Minoga.
They could sure do with a little Mack Truck up the middle.
It wouldn’t be the first time that Queensland claim a PNG International or bring a player back from England to play.
DALE SHEARER
Talking of coming out of retirement, the Queensland legend famous for being top Origin scorer for years and kicking duels had always remarked late in his playing career that he was available for Origin.
Maybe Dale Shearer has been in touch with the powers that be in Maroons HQ
THE QUEENSLAND PUBLIC
Much like when Spinal Tap tell their audience in The Simpsons that their fans are sixth member of the band, Queensland are doing the same with the people from Queensland.
If so, if we know rugby league administration in Australia, it will involve charging someone a large sum of money.
