The race has been won and run, and the 2019 Azerbaijan Grand Prix results are confirmed, and as ever our thoughts on the race, and the drivers are here with our Good, Bad and Ugly.
We feature a few of our thoughts of the race and rate it out of 50, plus the all important Good, Bad and Ugly. Where we assign points for those who had a good race, bad race, and also based on a few other mildly important stats.
Plenty to get through, so straight into the 2019 Azerbaijan Grand Prix Results – Good, Bad, Ugly
2019 AZERBAIJAN GRAND PRIX RESULTS – MOMENT OF THE RACE
Sadly it was probably Daniel Ricciardo reversing into Dani Kvyat.
2019 AZERBAIJAN GRAND PRIX RESULTS – RACE RATING
Was it a good race? Well here’s our sort of scientific rating out of 50.
SURPRISE – 2/10
The surprise for this race, and indeed the season is where is the Ferrari pace that threatened in pre season.
SUSPENSE – 2/10
There wasn’t a great deal of suspense as the front order looked reasonably static and safe for most of the race.
RACING – 6/10
More decent racing from the midfield, and the recovery drives of Leclerc and Gasly kept us amused for a while.
SIGNIFICANT EVENT – 2/10
Not really, aside from the Ricciardo-Kvyat tangle.
SEASON DEFINING – 4/10
Not quite season defining, but the Mercedes have now secured four 1-2’s, and Ferrari are lagging. Max continues to lead the way for Red Bull. And hopefully we have seen the low point of Ricciardo’s season.
TOTAL RACE RATING 16/50
Not quite the classic that have come before in Baku, not like the F2 which always entertains.
2019 AZERBAIJAN GRAND PRIX RESULTS – GOOD, BAD, or UGLY
Who was king of the road,? Who was the villain? Who stunk up the place? Who outperformed expectations? Or was just plain unlucky? We split up the best of the best and worst of the worst with Good, Bad and Ugly of the 2019 Azerbaijan Grand Prix results.
THE GOOD
VALTTERI BOTTAS (Best of the Good)
Beat Hamilton to pole, beat him off the stat, and won the race and lead the Championship.
If that’s not ticking every box then we don’t what is.
Proving a very worthy adversary this season if Hamilton is slightly off the pace.
LEWIS HAMILTON
Despite being out-pointed by his team mate this weekend, he can look over his shoulder and see a Ferrari behind, and the much vaunted Ferrari pace in Azerbaijan didn’t materialise. Was only four points in front of Vettel this time last year, in 2019 it is 34 points. Now to just see off that pesky team mate.
MAX VERSTAPPEN
Doing all he can in the Red Bull. Snapping at the heels of Mercedes and thrashing his team mate. His race was potentially affected by getting stuck behind Sergio Perez at the start.
SERGIO PEREZ
Took advantage of issues for Gasly and Leclerc in qualifying and grabbed fifth place, which was Saturday’s reward for best of the rest.
Got in front of Max Verstappen at the start, and had the Best of the Rest title under control for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
CARLOS SAINZ
Outqualified by his younger team mate, and failed to get into Q3, but should be happy with a solid seventh place and not far off Perez in the end.
LANDO NORRIS
Outqualified Carlos Sainz in seventh, and did a good job during the race to bring the car home in eighth place. Decent showing so far in 2019 as a rookie.
THE BAD
ROBERT KUBICA (Worst of the Bad)
Not a great comeback for the Pole this season so far. The Williams is slow, and he is being routinely beaten by his rookie team mate in most sessions and races.
A crash in qualifying didn’t help his situation.
It looks a long and pointless season ahead.
DANIEL RICCARDO (=Worst of the Bad)
At least he got out of Q1 and beat his mate in qualifying, but there were few happy times aside from that. Just missed out on Q3, and was racey for a while in the race.
Got the moment with Kvyat wrong, and compounded it with reversing into him, like a Honda at the local supermarket.
Worse still, he grabs a penalty for the upcoming Spanish GP. Not the thing you need when you’re struggling to get into Q3 as it is.
There’s still Monaco around the corner, his best, perhaps only chance for a dry podium this season.
DANI KVYAT
Qualfiying sixth was a great job, but the end result of the race was a bit unfair. Tangled with Daniel Riccairdo who then reversed into him. A DNF was inevitable given his luck.
THE UGLY
PIERRE GASLY
Still being outdone by Max Verstappen, and another underwhelming results. Although worth noting was his good charge from the pitlane to points quickly.
Talk already of a replacement. Ouch.
CHARLES LECLERC
Is putting a driver onto the shitty strategy the best way to avoid team orders? Possibly.
Although he did run into the wall in qualifying, but there’s also the argument that once again the team did wrong by him with the wrong tyre call.
He drove through the field nicely, and looks the real deal when not being told to move over, slow down, or watch that the car doesn’t break down.
There’s a purple patch coming soon for Leclerc where everything is going to go right for a few races in a row, and it will start his slightly unlikely title push.
