Premier League Predictions Week 17 – Gurgler v Deadliest Nickname

As we come down from the excitement of the final Group Stage round of the Champions League, we calm down and relax with our Premier League Predictions Week 17 for this weekend.

Every week we offer up tips, a mini preview, betting advice and an alternative view on the Premier League.

It’s a lot like BBC’s Lawro vs Somebody preview, but better and with more stuff. Arguably.

This week our opponent tips aren’t a celebrity or musician we’ve barely heard of, but tips based on something a little different. Like this week where opposition tips are based on how dangerous each team’s nickname/mascot is.

Premier League Predictions Week 17 – Gurgler v How Deadly/Dangerous each Club’s Nickname Is

Opponent Tips Background: A nickname/mascot is an important part of the Football Club, perhaps too important if you ask Hull City fans after a battle to stop the owner calling them Hull Tigers. But they sell merchandise, and are used as part of the coverage of the game. So why not use something that important to determine Premier League predictions.

For this week’s opponent tips, we have compared each side’s nickname/mascot and determined which one is the most dangerous. Some are obvious, some we’ve had to be creative. Either way, which ever one we have deemed to be more dangerous got the tip.

MANCHESTER CITY to beat Everton (2-1)
SPURS to beat Burnley (3-1)
WATFORD to beat Cardiff (2-0)
WOLVES to beat Bournemouth (2-0)
DRAW – Crystal Palace v Leicester (1-1)
DRAW – Huddersfield v Newcastle (0-0)
FULHAM to beat West Ham (3-2)
DRAW – Southampton v Arsenal (2-2)
DRAW – Brighton v Chelsea (1-1)
DRAW – Man Utd v Liverpool (0-0)

Premier League Predictions Week 17 v How Dangerous each Nickname/Mascot is

EVERTON to beat Manchester City
(Toffees being confectionery could lead to obesity which kills around 30K a year in the UK. Citizens are usually nice people.)

BURNLEY to beat Spurs
(Burnley = Clarets = Alcohol and Alcohol kills over 7000 in the UK every year. A few more than a Rooster does)

WATFORD to beat Cardiff
(Both are relatively harmless, but a Hornet can cause some short term discomfort.)

WOLVES to beat Bournemouth
(As seen of the Game of Thrones, Wolves are deadly. Cherries are not really, although they could be used for poisoning)

DRAW – Crystal Palace v Leicester
(Too hard to separate or could up with anything clever. Although unlikely, we’d rather not be attacked by either)

HUDDERSFIELD to beat Newcastle.
(In general dogs are more dangerous than a bird. But you could argue against in the case of the Australian Magpie)

WEST HAM to beat Fulham
(While a Cottage would hurt if it landed on top of you, an Iron is more to cause damage due to its portability.)

ARSENAL to beat Southampton
(Quite obviously a gun will beat an angel)

CHELSEA to beat Brighton
(The blues aka Depression has a dangerous impact in modern life, whereas a Seagull might steal your chips, which is more annoying than dangerous)

MANCHESTER UTD to beat Liverpool
(A Red Devil will beat a straight Red most days)

Midweek Premier League Predictions Week 17 Quick Mini Preview

GAME BY GAME PREVIEW IN A FEW WORDS OR SOMETIMES MORE.

MANCHESTER CITY v EVERTON

A great game to kick off the weekend. Now that Manchester City are beatable perhaps Everton could give them a real go, and Everton didn’t have to play midweek football. They’ll have to overcome Manchester City’s unrivaled home form this season – 8 wins from 8 games and for and against on 30-5. Everton are down in 15th in away form. But they do have a decent record against Manchester City.

BARELY INTERESTING STAT: Since the ownership of Sheikh Mansour at Manchester City in 2008, their EPL record v Everton is less impressive than you would have thought and stands like this. 8 Everton wins, 7 City and 5 draws. Even more interesting is the last three EPL fixtures in Manchester have ended as draws.

BEST BET: Both Teams to Score @ $1.72

SPURS v BURNLEY

Spurs should be riding high after making the Champions League . Burnley’s win last start broke an eight game winless streak which saw six losses, and took them off the bottom of the last six form table. Hard to see a second consecutive win.

BARELY INTERESTING STAT: Burnley last beat Spurs back in 2010. Go back to 1974 for the last time that happened in London.

BEST BET: Son to score anytime @ $1.80

WATFORD v CARDIFF CITY

After looking busted arse and last after the first eight games, Cardiff are now winning every second game. Or more to the point, they are winning all of their home games recently. One draw from 7 away matches is form that probably won’t help them this weekend. Talking of form, Watford are equal last in the last six form guide with Southampton.

BARELY INTERESTING STAT: These two teams have never met in the Premier League or First Division

BEST BET: UNDER 2.5 GOALS @ $1.82

WOLVES v BOURNEMOUTH

Wolves season is back underway with a pair of consecutive wins, and a nicely timed arrival of Bournemouth who are on a dreadful run of results with five losses from six games. Still in the tight midfield bunch but were blown away by Liverpool last start.

BARELY INTERESTING STAT: The only two times these teams have met this century was in the Championship four seasons ago where Bournemouth won both games 2-1.

BEST BET: Wolves to win @ $1.91

CRYSTAL PALACE v LEICESTER

One win in their last 11 sees Crystal Palace just two points above the drop. They have just played most of the top six, but need to start picking up points with new managers at teams below them. Leicester are threatening to have the most midfield season of all time.

BARELY INTERESTING STAT: Crystal Palace won the two games by 5-0 (H) and 3-0 (A) last season.

BEST BET: A penalty scored @ $4.15

HUDDERSFIELD v NEWCASTLE

Huddersfield have turned the corner form wise recently, but the wins have stopped and they find themselves third last. Newcastle aren’t too far above them. Both teams need something in January, at least one team won’t get it.

BARELY INTERESTING STAT: Last season saw the same result in both games – 1-0 to the home side. The time they were in the first tier together before that was in 1971/72, where both games resulted in 0-0 draws.

BEST BET: A 0-0 draw @ $7.00

FULHAM v WEST HAM

Hopefully for Fulham the new manager bounce is done with yet, if so, and based on their Man Utd performance last weekend, things look quite grim. West Ham are on a great run of three wins, and well entrenched in that midfield battle.

BARELY INTERESTING STAT: Only Liverpool can beat West Ham’s current winning streak of three.

BEST BET: Over 2.5 Goals @ $1.63

SOUTHAMPTON v ARSENAL

Southampton have a shiny new manager with a great name, from a club whose super energy drink is from his home country. They will hoping he can give them some wings to get them out of the bottom three. Southampton are on the longest winless record, and Arsenal the second longest in the league, but haven’t lost a game in any comp since the second week of the EPL season.

BARELY INTERESTING STAT: Arsenal have only won once at Southampton in the Saints recent EPL stint (from 2012). Two wins and three draws highlighted by a 4-0 win on Boxing Day 2015.

BEST BET: Over 2.5 Goals @ $1.57

BRIGHTON v CHELSEA

Chelsea will be riding high after being the first EPL side to beat Manchester City this season. But they will be recovering from the inconvenient away trip on Thursday night for the Europa League. Brighton couldn’t back up their excellent 10 man win over Crystal Palace against Burnley last weekend, but they are so much better at home, and Chelsea have lost their last two away.

BARELY INTERESTING STAT: Brighton have only beaten Chelsea once – in the 1932/33 FA Cup

BEST BET: Glenn Murray to score anytime $3.25

MANCHESTER UTD v LIVERPOOL

The weekend’s big name fixture. Both powerhouses of English football of the past four decades, one seemingly on their way back to glory days by taking the lead of the EPL last weekend, the other drifting further and further away from previous glory. Both sides went through to the Champions League knockout stage, in different circumstances.

BARELY INTERESTING STAT: Liverpool have only won once at Old Trafford this decade.

BEST BET: Under 2.5 Goals @ $2.18

Midweek Premier League Three Bold Predictions Week 17

  • Liverpool v Manchester United to underwhelm, followed by smug Jose Mourinho declaring a tactical masterclass.
  • Fulham to do something, we hope.
  • The weekend’s crazy game will be at Southampton and will feature many shots, a few goals each, and a late injury time equaliser.
