With news that our favourite rugby league player Willie Minoga is heading to the UK to play for Championship side Barrow, we thought it was the perfect time to Celebrate Willie Minoga Appreciation Week.
The news of the Freight Train’s new terminus in the UK is a mixture of sad and great joy.
Sad because it means we are unlikely to see Willie Minoga on the Intrust Super Cup scene across South Est Queensland in 2019, not that we saw him much in 2018 thanks to a lack of coverage of the reigning premiers.
But the overwhelming feeling is happiness, that the powerhouse is finally getting a chance outside of the Intrust Super Cup.
Along with many of his team mates, the PNG Hunters are overlooked for NRL opportunities, even after their premiership season. Australian rugby league’s loss, and the UK rugby league’s gain.
We’re not quite sure how Barrow as a team will go in 2019, or if Willie Minoga will enjoy a northern English climate, but we can guarantee he will win fans, and kick arse in the UK.
Hopefully, he will live up to the hype, and become the impact cult hero player in the UK that he has become for us here at The Gurgler. Whether it be with his on field power, or sleek mohawk hair design, the rugby league fans in Barrow will be treated in 2019.
We’ll remember the barnstorming hit ups, the crunching defence, plenty of tries, including that very important one in September 2017 when he won the premiership for the Hunters.
So to celebrate Willie Minoga Appreciation Week, we say the very best of luck for a well deserved chance, and offer up a few of his finest moments in the Intrust Super Cup. We’ll miss the annual catch up at Davies Park.
