Sad news today for fans of Terry Mackenroth as the Queensland Government announced it would no longer be giving a Suncorp Stadium Grandstand Name to the former Queensland Labor Powerbroker known as The Fox.
Unlike most governments, Queesnland’s listened to the people who overwhelmingly didn’t want a Suncorp Stadium Grandstand Name being after a politician, no matter how big the contribution.
We also agree, which is why we have a magnificent seven selection of Alternative Suncorp Stadium Grandstand Name for your consideration.
THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN ALTERNATIVE SUNCORP STADIUM GRANDSTAND NAME
THE WALLY LEWIS STAND
Is there anyone else who deserves a Suncorp Stadium Grandstand Name than the King aka The Emperor of Lang Park.
Very few sports stars in Australia are more synonymous with success at a particular ground than Wally Lewis. So many great moments, and victories, so why not treasure those memories forever with a grandstand.
And if an Emperor can’t get a grandstand to go with the statue, then who the hell can.
THE SMITH-SLATER-CRONK STAND
How about not just one name but three of the biggest names to play during Queensland’s greatest period.
Hard to argue that these three had a massive role to play in the many Origin series wins. Perhaps throw in Thurston too to make the stand name complete.
Could be opened by the partners of the players. With a hearty handshake with Cronk and Smith to seal the deal.
FONDA METASSA
Why does the stand have to be named after massive superstars from the current era, or the one before? Why not a man who was one of the biggest names in the Brisbane competition in the pre Broncos era, back when Suncorp Stadium was Lang Park, Red and Yellow seats were the most arse achingly uncomprimising of concrete terrace, and the local competition could pull 10,000’s of fans.
And there’s no biggest name from the golden era of the Brisbane competition that Fonda Metassa aka The Golden Greek.
If you haven’t heard of Fonda Metassa, catch this excellent piece of work.
LANG STAND
Since the Stadium is currently known as Suncorp Stadium, and will no doubt change through various sponsors hands over the next few decades, can we acknowledge the past and call the new Suncorp Stadium Grandstand Name the Lang Stand.
THE BARRY GOMERSALL STAND
Not all State of Origin legends are players, those old enough can recall the man known as The Grasshopper – Barry Gomersall – will recall one of the most flamboyant rugby league referees of all time.
Whether he would get away with some of his interpretations in this modern day of social media is debatable, what isn’t though, he is a Queensland rugby league icon, who needs recogbition, and what better than a Suncorp Stadium Grandstand Name.
THE SOUTH QUEENSLAND CRUSHERS STAND
Victims of the Super League war, and by now most rugby league have forgotten or have chosen to ignore an era where Brisbane had the audacity of having two rugby league teams. The one that no longer exists was the South Queensland Crushers, the team led by Mario Fenech, Bob Lindner, and briefly by Garrick Morgan. They played in the beautiful kit of German Mustard and Navy Blue, colours sort of synonymous with Brisbane.
It won’t be long before they are completely forgotten, so before they do, let’s honour their memory with Suncorp Stadium Grandstand Name.
THE WILLIE MINOGA STAND
The greatest live sporting moment of our lives was the last minute try to Willie Minoga as the PNG Hunters won the 2017 Intrust Super Cup Grand Final.
In our opinion, the moment needs a Suncorp Stadium Grandstand Name.
And if it doesn’t, the Sunsuper end grandstand of Suncorp Stadium will always be known as the Willie Minoga Stand in our minds. For ever.
