State of Origin Game One is done and dusted, and that means rugby league can go back to the bread and butter of the weekly fixtures like this week’s Intrust Super Cup Round 14.
On the theme of State of Origin, the players for the Intrust Super Cup are up for selection in the Residents Team to play NSW Residents as a Curtain Raiser for the big game in Sydney.
So players will be trying to put on a show, and regain some Queensland pride if they are selected.

The weekend kicks off with the Channel Nine cameras rolling, and they have picked up a decent game for the viewers at home. It features the table topping Burleigh Bears, who are undefeated at home in 2018, and flying even higher after Round 13 as they extended their lead on top of the Intrust Super to 4 points. The Northern Pride are in form too, having won four of their last five games, against finals contenders Redcliffe, Norths and an impressive win over Souths Logan which featured plenty of points. In fact both teams scored 46 points to win last weekend. The Pride’s record isn’t as great away from home this season, but their recent form should mean this will be a decent game to follow.

The big news for this match is the return of Sandor Earl after an injury in pre season. It is some effort if he makes it onto the field, and a feel good story for rugby league. He deserves a decent crack, considering he seems to be the only one who was shunned after the Dank debacle.
After finally getting home in a close one last weekend against the Devils, the Falcons will be hoping to double down on the much needed home win this weekend against the Ipswich Jets. They needed to as the Sunshine Coast’s win moved them within 2 points of the Top 6, and in a group of 6 teams within two points of each other. The Magpies themselves are in group of three teams in second place, they were outright but the Northern Pride stung them last weekend.
This game will no doubt provide some of the Queensland Residents team. And for Justin Olam, a chance to jump up the Melbourne Storm Three Quarter queue with Young Tomumaipea leaving for mission work.

This has the potential for being the match of the round, with Townsville flying high in equal second, and the Easts Tigers finally putting a few good results together with their massively talented team. The Tigers have now won two in a row, after a really poor run of results before, and they have easily beaten the Minor Premiers PNG Hunters at home and Wynnum Seagulls away in the past weekends. Townsville in Townsville is a different challenge, especially given the Blackhawks current run of five straight wins at home. Easts have won just two of six on the road, but did beat Townsville home and away last year.

Tweed Heads super run of wins came to an end last weekend at Dolphin Oval, as Redcliffe gave them a small reality check with a 42-16 win. Prior to that, Tweed Heads had won 6 in a row, after a start to the season that saw them winless and last after 6 rounds. These two teams fought it out for the wooden spoon last season, with Tweed Heads jumping out of last spot on the last weekend of the year by beating eventual premiers PNG Hunters. The stats are on the side of the Seagulls, as they have won 13 of the past 14 clashes between these two sides.

Brisbane’s northside rivalry resumes on Sunday afternoon at Bishop Park as Norths take on Redcliffe. It’s been a while since this clash was played with both teams in the Top 6, Norths just holding onto 6th place after a run of four losses in a row halting the momentum of a great start to 2018. Their home record is pretty impressive though, having won four of the last five, the only loss a surprise one to the Cutters.
Redcliffe themselves had a lean run not long ago, but two straight wins leading into this weekend makes them the form side, and they currently sit second with the competition’s best for and against. Three of their three-quarter line have played for the Broncos this year, and that will give them the advantage over the Devils, despite Norths having arguably the more superior halves pairing.

Is this the weekend that the Wynnum Seagulls break through for a much needed home win? Fans in the Chook Pen and around BMD Kougari will certainly be hoping so, as the Seagulls are yet to win at home this season and were on the end of a big loss to their local rivals Easts last home game. Wynnum did have a good win last weekend in Mackay, so just need to transfer that road form in two points at home.
Ipswich have been in and out of the Top 6, and currently lie 7th, but are equal on points with 6th. The Jets aren’t going a great deal better on the road with just wins from six games so far, but they have beaten Wynnum twice in the last two meetings at Kougari.

The revival of the Hunters form was short lived as they were comprehensively outplayed against the Easts Tigers last weekend, but hopefully for the Hunters a return to the National Football Stadium will bring back the winning ways. The Hunters are still without captain and chief playmaker Ase Boas, and despite the combined talents of Watson Boas and Charlie Simon, it still doesn’t make up for the loss in the captain’s premiership quality. Stanton Albert returns to the stating side at prop, and another big man Moses Meninga, has been included in the extended squad.
Mackay may well down at the bottom of the Intrust Super Cup ladder, but that position hides the fact that they have been reasonably competitive in 2018, and are certainly capable of an upset. You could argue they have the superior halves combination, and there’s not much in the other areas also. Of course the Cutters don’t have a Willie Minoga.
