We’ve occasionally been accused at The Gurgler of being a little too cynical or acerbic all the time, so just after we launched our monthly vote for the April 2018 Jerk of the Month, we are also launching the Unsung Hero of the Month for April 2018.
We should take time out once a month to applaud the unsung heroes, just the people we like to celebrate – the under appreciated, the forgotten or the somewhat forgettable.
Yes most of them are sporting related, but sport is our world, and sport is great. And given how awful the rest of the news world is, why not take some solace from sport.
Guaranteed, is that most of them won’t appear in mainstream media, which is why they have a home here.
There’s a flavour of the Commonwealth Games this month, but the next one is four months away, so it won’t happen again. Or why not relive some of the Gold with our Celebrate a Soon To Be Forgotten Commonwealth Games Gold Medalist.
Enjoy the Unsung Heroes of the Month for April 2018 nominations, and don’t forget to vote below.
UNSUNG HERO OF THE MONTH NOMINATIONS FOR APRIL 2018
BILLY MONGER
Billy Monger is not a name many would recognise from the world of motorsport, or at all, but he is a young 18 year old up and coming British motor racing driving who suffered a horrendous accident in 2017, which given the ferocity and speed of the accident would have killed so many in years gone by. Monger did survive in the end, but both of his legs were amputated.
That didn’t and hasn’t stopped him getting back into the sport he loves, and his return at the very end of March is the reason for his nomination for Hero of the Month.
Debuting in the ultra competitive Brittsh F3 series, Billy Monger managed to nab a podium on his return to the sport in a specially modified car. Proving what kind of talent and determination the youngster has.
If that doesn’t deserve a nomination for Hero of the Month, we don’t know what will.
DANIEL REPACHOLI
Is there anything more Australian than a man looking a lot like Ned Kelly winning a shooting Gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games?
Probably, but not in April 2018, thanks to the big games.
Daniel Repacholi has competed at the last four Commonwealth Games, won gold at three of them, and been a medalist at all of them.
He is one of the many unsung golden heroes that most will forget, or have already forgotten, but we add him to our list for Hero of the Month for April.
AARON WILSON
You have to love a Gold Medalist from the 2018 Commonwealth Games, playing Lawn Bowls, whose article begins with the word “Shirtless”.
Another Commonwealth Games Gold medalist that should be given an extended hat doff and nod before he is forgotten.
And with a nickname of Discotheque, why should he ever be forgotten.
The ripping off the shirt was actually a tribute to our second favourite lawn bowler of all time – Kelvin Kerkow – who did it when he won Gold in the Melbourne 2006 shindig.
BOROBI
Can’t remember who Borobi is alreaady? That’s exactly why he is nominated for our Hero of the Month for April 2018.
Borobi is the Blue and Yellow Koala mascot used for the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. And given the awful, and awfully wankerfied mascots released by some sporting teams, and big events for the last few decades, he was an excellent outcome.
Whilst Peter Beattie and his organising committee take all the credit for the running of the vent, word on the street was that Borobi was the glue for the whole Commonwealth Games.
He was popular, as limited edition plush toys became exactly that, organisers unable to keep up with demand. Maybe he will be even more popular after the two and half people read this story
FOX SPORTS
For paying probably well over the odds to nab the cricket from Channel Nein.
Sure they have to get into bed with Channel Seven, but as it will on Fox that is not a worry. And they recently announced the two networks will have separate commentators.
So, as long as Fox don’t take Michael Slater, we can remain friends.
Slater going to Fox would really affect our enjoyment in saying goodbye to Channel Nein.
DANIEL RICCIARDO
Daniel Ricciardo for his stunning Chinese Grand Prix win, where he proved a few things – you can overtake, you can overtake for the lead, you can overtake without crashing into someone or running them off the road, and Red Bull aren’t quite as off the pace.
And, we may not have to settle for a Hamilton v Vettel Championship Douche v Turd Duel.
We salute the unsung hero of Australian sporting stars overseas.
