A Quick Intrust Super Cup Round 8 Preview

Intrust Super Cup Round 8 throws up an intriguing bunch of clashes, with the pick of the bunch on the Sunday between Townsville and Souths Logan, and the traditional Anzac clash between Burleigh and the PNG Hunters.

Saturdays games see every home team start outsiders, so there’s room for a couple of home upsets. Perhaps it could be Mackay beating Tweed Heads in the TV battle of second last v last, or maybe the Central Capras could go back to back against Wynnum in Rockhampton. Easts take on Norths, Redcliffe visit Ipswich, and the Sunshine Coast fly up to the Cairns in the other Saturday clash against the Northern Pride.

For Sunday the home outsider trend reverses for the clashes in Burleigh and Townsville. The game in Townsville is a tight one on paper between two in form top 6 sides, the other match up at Pizzey Park sees the Hunters attempt to get their first away win against the table topping Burleigh Bears.

SATURDAY 1:10pm – MACKAY CUTTERS v TWEED HEADS SEAGULLS
VIEW: Channel Nine @ 1pm

The big news for this made for TV clash is the return of Kane Elgey to the Tweed Heads Seagulls. The Titans five eighth has taken some of the blame it seems from their loss to the Cowboys, so Elgey will be forced to impress in a Seagulls jersey again to get back into the big time. He has a lot to work with in the backline with the McGrady brothers, and the electric AJ Brimson in the back, and a side on the up now, with the side on a run of two straight wins after going winless in the first five rounds. Mixed results for the Cutters of late, with a fine upset at Ipswich followed up with a resounding home loss to Redcliffe last weekend. They currently sit bottom on 4 points with the Tweed Heads Seagulls only one place above on points difference. Likely that at least one of these teams will be bottom after the weekend.

Redcliffe are on a roll now, they have won five in a row and have climbed to third on the ladder, and three of those wins have been on the road against Easts, Wynnum and Mackay. A good sign for their trip to North Ipswich Reserve on Saturday. Ipswich have won two from three at home this season, but slipped up at home last home game against Mackay. However, they did secure a good away win at the Falcons last weekend on the Sunshine Coast.

This should be a great clash between two sides with ambitions on possibly meeting again in September, and going on 2018 form it is easy to see Norths making it, and Easts always seem to be thereabout for September contention. Easts record has not been the greatest at home this season, they have lost against Ipswich and Redcliffe, so a flying Norths Devils will provide a big test. The Tigers also were beaten at Piggabeen by Tweed Heads. Norths also lost last weekend, and fell from first to fourth on points difference after a competitive showing in Townsville. But they beat Burleigh in the top of the table clash, so capable of beating the big sides.

Jahrome Hughes returns to action for the Falcons this weekend after injuring himself for the Storm in a pre season trial, it could be just the spark they need to get their 2018 campaign into full swing. They actually have more wins on the road this year (two at Wynnum and Mackay) than home this season, so a trip to Cairns shouldn’t worry them. What could worry them is the halves, if Todd Carney puts it all together. His partner Jake Clifford has been great for the Pride. The Pride have the best defensive record in the competition despite losing 4/7, but their attack is second last. Both teams are on 3 wins and 4 losses, so a loss could see the losing side cut adrift of the Top 6.

The Capras got their third win of the season in emerald last weekend, as a late Dave Taylor try grabbed victory over the Northern Pride, and they will fancy their chances of a win at home against the Wynnum Seagulls this weekend. They have hit and miss form at home in 2018, they have beaten beat Easts and Ipswich, were in a winnable position against Burleigh but lost, and were well beaten by Norths. Wynnum led 12-0 at half time against the Bears last weekend, but were unable to withstand the second half onslaught and went down to the competition leaders. The Seagulls problems don’t appear to be on the road, as their two wins for 2018 have been on their travels, although only as far as Suzuki Stadium and Suncorp Stadium.

This is the annual Anzac weekend clash between Burleigh and the PNG Hunters, which also doubles this year as the match ups of the two most recent Intrust Super premiers. Burleigh are certainly looking the most likely of the two sides to add another title to their record, as the currently lead the competition after just one loss. The Hunters meanwhile are having much less fun, especially on the road, where they have lost all 4 games, News from PNG is that Thompson Teteh will return to the Hunters squad, and that will be an exciting addition for those calling for more experience in the Hunters line up, and the former Redcliffe centre will still be a very handy player to have and to help the next wave of Hunters through.

The last game of the weekend is arguably its finest, with two teams in the top 6 and in form. Townsville have turned around their ordinary start to the year with a trio of wins, and they were able to defeat the then competition leading Norths Devils at home in last weekend. Another high flying Brisbane team come knocking at Jack Manski Oval, and the Souths Logan Magpies are only one spot below the top after a drought breaking win over the PNG Hunters in Port Moresby. Some very good players in both sides, some with genuine hopes for Queensland Residents selection.
