Celebrate International Pretend to Know Something About Golf Week – 2018 US Masters Edition

The 2018 US Masters is ready to tee off this week, and for a wide range of casual sporting enthusiasts that means brushing up on the golfing lingo and superlatives, and joining in for Celebrate International Pretend to Know Something About Golf Week.

Each week, or thereabouts, we attempt to give you a cheerful reason to get into the new working week. And although golf outside of Happy Gilmore is mostly boring, the US Masters is one exception we’ll make for the sport, as it is the most famous, the tournament with the most stories (usually involving soul crushing defeats for Greg Norman), and some of the nicest backgrounds pictures in sport.

But that won’t stop a parade of temporary golfing gurus from handing out their expertise and tidbits

It certainly won’t stop us.

The following are terms you’ll need to know to Celebrate International Pretend to Know Something About Golf Week….

Amen Corner – a group of holes (11,12,13)  on the back nine. How did it get its name? Apparently from the 1958 Master featuring Arnold Palmer according to this website and who are we to argue.

Back Nine – the last 9 holes of 18, and usually the only holes shown by TV coverage.

You The Man!!! – a phrase usually shouted out when it has become quite clear with very few holes to go who will win the tournament.

Masters Flashback – footage of previous Masters, that usually involve Greg Norman not winning the Masters. That 1996 still hurts.

Adam Scott – A mysterious being, who remains Australia’s only winner of this event.

Green Jacket – The winning trophy for the Masters Champion.

16th Hole – the hole where Greg Norman put his tee shot into the water.

2018 US MASTERS FUN?

Why not get together with your friend and family and devise a Bingo game where you all come up with a bunch of Golf based phrases and puns that could be used on the broadcast.

Or a drinking game where a sip must be taken for every missed putt. Although the hours and work days of the tournament would make that largely anti social, and in some cases a sackable offence at work.

2018 US MASTERS PLAYERS?

As for the actual golfers playing it, a name many would know Tigers woods will be playing, and this time it is golf. He’s back and the golfing world, if not the sporting world, will be waiting on the progress back to golfer, rather than ex sports star gone bad.

Due to the lack of Miguel Angel Jiminez aka The Mechanic, Rod Pampling aka Great Aussie Battler Pamps, or Andrew Johnston aka Beef playing at this tournament, and the subsequent lack of interesting people, we have put our full support being Thai Golfer Kiradech Aphibarnrat as pointed out in a previous article.

All the best players should be there, as Top 50 in the world is a requirement, as is being a previous winners or high finisher of this event. There’s no qualification, just certain criteria that must be met, and that exclusivity ensures most year’s are a quality contest. You can’t impress friends and work colleagues by reciting the 2018 US Masters qualification details from the Wikipedia page.

So get into your Plus Fours (goofy looking golf pants), grab your nearest Broomstick Putter, along with your Hot Dot Pro balls and get into the golfing spirit with Celebrate International Pretend to Know Something About Golf Week.
