We’ve occasionally been accused at The Gurgler of being a little too cynical or acerbic all the time, so on the day after we launched our monthly vote for March 2018 Jerk of the Month, we also launch the first ever Unsung Hero of the Month. Starting off with the February 2018 Unsung Hero of the Month.
Whilst the award is technically for March 2018, it also includes some people who we’ve just thought of this month who deserves a little extra or any recognition.
Yes most of them are sporting related, but sport is our world, and sport is great. And given how awful the rest of the news world is, why not take some solace from sport.
Some of them will be reasonably obscure too, but don’t the less popular deserve a hero award as well.
Enjoy the Unsung Heroes of the Month for March 2018 nominations, and don’t forget to vote below.
PETER DASENT
aka The Guy who plays piano on Play School
Is there a more tedious gig in television than playing the piano to the many, many sing-a-longs on Play School? Not if you love music, which it appears Peter Dasent does – if you check out his website.
Parents and kid show enthusiasts will know of the piano based songs that fill the middle of the days when children or shift workers need some quiet time, but how many would even know the name or at minimum appreciate the fine work of the piano player. Whilst “Wheels On The Bus” and “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes” aren’t necessarily the most complex of musical beasts, surely having to play them 100+ times a year for the cold atmosphere of an empty studio deserves more credit.
Which is why we think he deserves a little recognition, and why he has earned his nomination for Unsung Hero of the Month for March 2018, and many more months.
MATT RENSHAW
A former Australian Test cricketer, who was often derided for not scoring like a cavalier T20 player in Tests, and slightly underperforming in one series was dropped for the Ashes Series for not scoring enough runs in the preceding Sheffield Shield games. He was replaced by Cameron Bancroft for the summer.
Fast forward a few months and Renshaw has been included in the Sheffield Shield Team of the Year, and led Queensland to the Shield Final at Allan Border Field, all while scoring a pile of runs for Queensland.
With the controversy in South Africa involving his replacement, it may not be long until we see Renshaw back at the top of the Australian order.
PABLO LARRAZABAL
We admit it, we love Spanish golfers, Miguel Angel Jiminez is one of our favourite sports stars of all time in any sport. As so for the Unsung Hero of the Month for March we offer up Pablo Larrazabal.
Why? Well now you’re asking, his name caught our eye after seeing the headline “Pablo Larrazabal is tied second at the Indian Open – despite waking up 38 minutes before his tee-time” from the BBC Sport Website. Good enough for us, having tee off social golf in various states of fitness in the past.
To find out he still finished fourth in that tournament was good to know, as was our other favourite golfer Andrew “Beefy” Johnston finishing second after losing a playoff.
But upon further surfing, this line caught our eye about Pablo Larrazabal from Wikipedia revealed another interesting moment – “In a bizarre incident in April, Larrazábal was attacked by a swarm of hornets during the second round of the Maybank Malaysian Open and resorted to jumping into a lake to escape.[4] He received around 20 stings, but still managed to card a round of 68″.
BURNLEY FC Players & Coaching Staff
For letting the kids into their dugout area during the recent pitch invasion at West Ham.
The West Ham fans themselves have been nominated for Jerks of the Month for March.
WESTS TIGERS
Very few outside of the most loyal fans would have predicted such early season competitiveness in the NRL, but somehow they have beaten two pre season title favourites Roosters and Storm, and were unlucky to be beaten by the Broncos on the back of an ordinary golden point penalty.
They have no real superstars, Benji Marshall was back in the day, but he has returned to the club via the Redcliffe Dolphins. The rest are all a bunch of good first grade players, but somehow they have managed to be very competitive early in 2018.
They don’t score a lot of points, and drop the ball, but can defend and for some reason they are likable battlers and a team for neutrals to get behind.
