February 2018 Unsung Hero of the Month Nominations – Voting Open

We’ve occasionally been accused at The Gurgler of being a little too cynical or acerbic all the time, so on the same day we launched our monthly vote for February 2018 Jerk of the Month, we also launch the first ever Unsung Hero of the Month. Starting off with the February 2018 Unsung Hero of the Month.

Whilst the award is technically for February 2018, we will include the last few months to catch up for the year, and to ensure a bumper crop for our first Unsung Hero of the Month.

Yes most of them are sporting related, but sport is our world, and sport is great. And given how awful the rest of the news world is, why not take some solace from sport.

Enjoy the Unsung Heroes of the Month for Dec-Jan-Febish nominations, and don’t forget to vote below.

Brad Hogg

There are many great things about Big Bash Cricket, most of them are the fact that it isn’t on Channel Nein, and the rest is because of Brad Hogg.

This season’s edition probably one of his very best, but he still offered plenty, with the ball, in the field, and most importantly, with the fans.

Very few cricketers are loved or deserved to be loved like Brad Hogg, a crowd favourite at any ground and rightly so.

This may be from a little while ago, but with the next Big Bash League so far away in December, it is our only chance to crowbar him into our Unsung Hero of the Month.

Adebayo Akinfenwa

Adebayo Akinfenwa aka The Beast is a fourth tier footballer for Wycombe Wanderers, some regulars will know him from our constant adoration.

Football’s strongest man may appear more suited to rugby, but the man still has silky skills, help yourself to the clip below. He may be 35 too, but that hasn’t stopped him scoring and assisting this season, and in February, both have earned the Hero of the Month nomination.

He is top of the assists, and why wouldn’t he be as football’s most fearsome target man, and second in the actual goal scoring.

We salute and nominate.

Benevento goalkeeper Alberto Brignoli

Most will know neither Benevento or Alberto Brignoli, but he earned himself a spot in our Hero of the Month nominations after scoring a sweet last minute header, as a Golakeeper.

But it is not just the fact that he is a goalkeeper, and the header was a particularly excellent dive header, it was the context of the moment that made it so great.

Benevento were promoted to the Italian Serie A and as the big club that is AC Milan arrived for the game, Benevento had yet to take a point. Not even a draw in their first 14 matches. 14 straight losses to start the season. The video tells the story of the goal, but what a way to earn your first top flight point, and against AC Milan.

Yes, this technically didn’t happen this month, but it is a Hero fo the Month catch up.

Matt Graham, Jarryd Hughes, Scott James

No idea who Matt Graham, Jarryd Hughes or Scott James are? Neither were we, it took a visit to Wikipedia to discover the three Australian medalists from the 2018 Winter Olympics.

They have won Silver, Silver and Bronze respectively for Men’s moguls, Men’s snowboard cross, and Men’s half pipe.

Whilst we don’t care about the Winter Olympics usually, we have a soft spot for obscure sporting achievers, which given the level of interest in Winter sports outside of the big 4 year shindig will be exactly what this trio will be in 12 months+.

Pita Taufatofua aka Shirtless Tongan Flag Bearer

He’s back after exciting the world at the Olympics in Rio in 2016. It doesn’t really matter if he wins when you can have the kind of exposure he gets.

D’Arcy Short

An Australian Cricketer to get excited about, who is hard to hate. Yet.

Killed it in Big Bash, and made the step up to the Australian T20 side nicely.
