The 2017 Gurgler Person of the Year is well under way for another year now and our next nomination is another of Australia’s finest sporting commentators, but unfortunately is no longer with us – Les Murray.
The Gurgler’s 2017 Person of the Year is a celebration of the people we think are important or deserving of some much needed limelight, not necessarily the most famous people on the face of the earth, although Les Murray’s passing this year gave him more mainstream limelight than usual. But he certainly is under appreciated.
That’s the way we like it for the 2017 Person of the Year, a celebration the forgotten, the underappreciated, the unsung heroes, the lesser lights, the Gurgler People of the Year.

LES MURRAY
The Voice of Australian Football, Mr Soccer, László Ürge are names associated with Les Murray, who sadly passed this year.
He fought the good fight to make Football aka Soccer close to the mainstream in Australian Sport.
Sure making World Cups helps, and the A League is going along nicely, but Les Murray ploughed through those lonely Sunday afternoons on SBS where his hours of the World Game were viewed by far fewer than it deserved.
We have previously discussed all that’s good about Les Murray in our Tribute to Les Murray when he passed away. So to read more about the great man, why not visit that soon.
For now, he could well be our first posthumous Person of the Year. Certainly no less deserving.

The Tennis Jerks may not be nice, likeable, or indeed People of the Year, but their contribution to content here means they are a must include.
6 – Willie Minoga
The 2015 Person of the Year delivered the greatest live sporting moment in history as he scored the winning try to allow the PNG Hunters to win the Intrust Super Cup.
