HUNTERS WIN AND STAY ON TOP

Our favourite team PNG Hunters bounced back from the disappointing loss at Redcliffe to beat the Ipswich Jets and are now three point in front of the Redcliffe Dolphins after the Sunshine Coast Falcons lost in Mackay.

The Hunters need to keep winning however, as Redcliffe and all the other foes for the top spot still have a guaranteed two points in the bank thanks to a late season bye to come.

Follow the highlights via the QRL website, but the Hunters eventually got going in the second half after going a try down early and only scoring themselves late into the first half. The 20-4 win sees Ipswich all but knocked out of the finals race.

TOP 6 SORTED, JUST THE ORDER LEFT TO SORT

With the results from the weekend it looks like the Top 6 has been sorted for the 2017 Intrust Super Cup season.

Ipswich and Mackay could make the top 6 if Townsville lose both their last two games and either the Jets and Cutters can make up the 150+ points difference. It would only take two 40 points losses for the Blackhawks and two 40+ wins for either side. Simples.

The all important top two is up for grabs with anyone of PNG Hunters, Redcliffe, Sunshine Coast and Easts capable of finishing first or second. Souths Logan need results to go their way to break into that group, and are likely to have to settle for fifth and sixth with Townsville. At least fifth and sixth will avoid a final in Port Moresby.

WOODEN SPOON BATTLE IS ON TOO

In previous seasons the wooden spoon battle has been decided early, but 2017 looks like it will go down to the final day. The unwanted prize is to be fought out between Tweed Heads, Central Capras, and the Northern Pride.

Central Capras are currently last, but they along with the Northern Pride still have a bye remaining, a luxury the Tweed Heads Seagulls don’t have. Although if the Tweed win one of their last three games and the Capras don’t then the spoon will be going back to Rockhampton.

The Capras face Ipswich and Souths Logan in SEQ, the Tweed Heads Seagulls have the current top two Redcliffe and PNG Hunters, but have beaten both this season already. The other game is against the Northern Pride which if Tweed win brings the Cairns side right into the scrap.

IN FORM BURLEIGH LEFT RUN TOO LATE

If only for a poor start the Bears might be challenging for the Top 6 or already in it.

They knocked off the Wynnum Seagulls in Round 22 after beating both the Sunshine Coast Falcons and Townsville Blackhawks. In their run of six wins in eight also saw a 44-0 demolition of Ipswich and their only two losses have come against the top two.

With Jamal Fogarty back, and their end of season form good, 2018 may be a great year ahead.

PLENTY O POINTS IN THE INTRUST SUPER CUP ROUND 22

You can say the Intrust Super Cup is rarely boring, and Round 22 saw 348 points scored at nearly 50 points a game.

Only the PNG Hunters v Ipswich didn’t, but that doesn’t matter when the Hunters win.
