The Belgian Grand Prix 2016 produced yet another Mercedes victory. This time it was Rosberg instead of Hamilton, giving hope that the Championship still might get to the third last race.
But it wasn’t as simple as a Mercedes dominated race that one would normally associate with the 2016 F1 season. There was plenty of action.
A few surprises too, and a red flag after a huge crash at one of the most dangerous parts of the track.
As ever, or when we can be bothered is a quick review for those with no time or interest in the details or F1 at all. Unlike Luca Badoer it is in point form.
Some ask why we bother with so many other publications and websites with F1 thoughts on the Belgian Grand Prix 2016. We say shut your teeth as our review is the only Clint Eastwood and Eli Wallach themed F1 review. That we know about.
THE GOOD
NICO ROSBERG – had it all his own way when Lewis Hamilton took 150 penalties for changing engines, gearbox and pants. Could have choked, Didn’t.
DANIEL RICCIARDO – showed his class on a day when his young teammate showed his inexperience.
LEWIS HAMILTON – damage limitation at its best.
NICO HULKENBERG – got to show his talents so he can be overlooked for a top drive. Good show for coin for outsider wagers too. Red flag hurt big money collects.
FERNANDO ALONSO – a great drive from the back showing McLaren Honda is not too far away. Here’s hoping he’s still around when they hit the front.
SPA ITSELF – like the US Masters Golf, could watch this race track for hours no matter the quality of the on track action.
GP2 – if ever F1 wants to know what fans what to see, record the GP2 race from Sunday. Highlight was Pierra Gasly’s overtake into Eau Rouge with a damaged front wing. Trulu great overtake. That wasn’t the only one, but one to look up.
ADRIAN NEWEY – news over the weekend that the guru of F1 aero has rekindled his interest in F1 with the new regs coming. That is promising for Red Bull fans and F1 fans in general as he may create another rocket. As long it is doesn’t become the new Mercedes and wins everything. Unless it is Ricciardo that wins everything.
THE BAD
KEVIN MAGNUSSEN’S CRASH – summing up Renaul’s poor season with a badly damaged car, a crash that probably would have badly injured or killed a driver not long ago. Caused a Red Flag which cost the Hulk from getting podium. Maybe.
THE UGLY
MAX VERSTAPPEN – made few friends from his race after the first corner incident and subsequent clashes. Would not be expecting Christmas card from Kimi and likely not to care. But may have to tone down his style, before the entire grid hates him. But is still young. Very young.
