The Gurgler’s Look at the Queensland Cup / @IntrustSuperCup – Round 9

THIS WEEK’S INTRUST SUPER CUP PREVIEW BROUGHT TO YOU BY THIS WEEK’S QUEENSLAND CUP LEGEND – ZIGGY STRASSER

People love their Sunday Football, but unlike the NRL (thanks to Channel 9) the love is shared around in the Intrust Super Cup this weekend with no less than 6 of the 7 weekend games on Sunday. They are spread all over the state (and PNG) too with matches in Cairns, Sunshine Coast, at Tigerland, and two games on the Gold Coast.

One of those games is the game between Burleigh and Townsville, the first of two all Top 4 clashes this weekend. Burleigh held on against the PNG Hunters last weekend, and will look to knock off similarly quality opposition this weekend. But the Bears don’t have the infamous number 16 Willie Minoga that Townsville do.

The other all Top 4 clash is between PNG and Redcliffe in Port Moresby. Plenty of stats say Redcliffe can’t win – no wins against Hunters, no one has won in Port Moresby, PNG have not lost in PNG anywhere since June 2014. About time to change all that we say.

Elsewhere there’s loads of games on the Sunday, which allows a rugby league romantic to reminisce about days of youth spent getting the around the grounds updates on a Sunday afternoon thanks to the ABC radio. In between visits to Dolphin Oval that is.

THIS WEEK’S GAMES in 20 WORDS OR LESS

Mackay v Ipswich @ Stadium Mackay – Kick Off – Friday 7pm
Ipswich broke their winless run last weekend, Mackay wish they could. Friday night football awaits.

Burleigh v Townsville @ Pizzey Park –  Kick Off – Sunday 1:40pm
Quality game awaits at Pizzey Park as Burleigh try to see off consecutive Top 4 sides.

Tweed Heads v Central @ Piggabeen – Kick Off – Sunday 2pm
Capras won just once last year, this year it’s the Top 6. Is it the coach considering Mackay 2016 form?

Sunshine Coast v Norths @ Sunshine Coast Stadium – Kick Off – Sunday 3pm
Norths off a bye and like to travel north, Sunshine Coast lost last three home fixtures.

PNG Hunters v Redcliffe @ National Football Stadium, Port Moresby  Kick Off – Sunday 3:05pm
Quality Top 4 clash awaits in Port Moresby – Dolphins due to break PNG hoodoo.

Northern Pride v Wynnum @ Barlow Park – Kick Off – Sunday 3pm
Wynnum doubled their season points with a bye last weekend, hard place to double win tally.

Easts v Souths Logan – Kick Off – Sunday 3pm
Easts won this by 50+ last year, Magpies look better in 2016 though.

A full and better in depth preview is with our friends at Nothing But League where we supply some of the official previews. Catch up with it all here.

PNG CORNER

THE HUNT FOR PNG OCTOBER

The Hunters season suffered a small setback last weekend as they were unable to come from behind two years in a row against the Bears on Anzac Day. The final 20-18 score line wasn’t a bad end result, but games are always going to be hard to win when 14-0 down and dropping the ball at key times and in key positions. They are back at home this weekend, and that will get them confidence to get over the in form Dolphins. A few of their players may also have a spring in their step after PNG Kumuls national side named their team for next weekend’s Pacific Tests.
