The Gurgler’s Look at the Queensland Intrust Super Cup Round 5

THIS WEEK’S INTRUST SUPER CUP PREVIEW BROUGHT TO YOU BY THIS WEEK’S QUEENSLAND CUP LEGEND – FONDA METASSA

Round 5 is upon us, and all teams are back in action this weekend after 4 got a rest last weekend. Another bunch of good match ups, some with a lot riding on them as Wynnum and Mackay both search for their first wins of the year.

The weekend opens with a clash of the last two premiers, both of whom have started off 2016 quietly. This year’s premiership favourites Townsville remain the only unbeaten side and face a trip to NSW to play Tweed Heads to defend their run.

The full preview is with our friends at Nothing But League. Catch up with it all here.

TEAM LISTS

The Team Lists for Round 2 are out and available in full here from the QRL. We have a few points below

  • The first thing we check is that #16 W. Minoga has been selected for the Townsville Blackhawks. He’s in, job done.
  • A few changes in the Hunters line up to discuss later.
  • Northern Pride’s Javid Bowen has been promoted to the Cowboys side this weekend.
  • Last year’s Player of the Year Patrick Templeman has moved from 5/8 to fullback and Broncos’ Greg Eden returns to the side in the centres in the Seagulls quest to stop a fifth straight loss.

THE HUNT FOR PNG OCTOBER

Each week we’ll bring a brief update on our favourite team in this competition – the excitement machine that is the PNG Hunters.

The PNG Hunters suffered their first loss for 2016, and as predicted by us, it was against one of their bogey sides – the Sunshine Coast Falcons. For the second year in a row the Hunters have been done on the Sunshine Coast, and it was down to a good Falcons display and some ill discipline from PNG that caused the defeat. In saying that, the Hunters did well to hold out the Falcons’ determined raids in the first half, with two of the finest last ditch try savers seen in a while.

But there’s always next week, which is in fact this week, and they fly to Mackay for their fourth away trip in five games. The Cutters provided plenty of fight in 2015 with just two points separating the sides in two fixtures, with a Hunters win and draw being the results. Mackay are struggling so far in 2016, and are without a win, so the Hunters will fancy their chances this weekend.

Some changes too, as Stargroth Amean returns to fullback, and dependable hooker Wartovo Puara has shifted to halfback. Adex Wera has moved into the centres. Ishamel Baikawa is a new face this week.
