Le Own Goal – The Gurgler’s European Football Weekly

European Football is great, and what’s more, the more you know, the more you can impress people with your knowledge of some of the big leagues. Given the results of the English teams in the first round of Champions League games, you may need to know them a bit better for the knockout stages.

Below we’ll give you the most basic and minimal information for the weekend ahead, including our multi league super multi. Pure street money at its best. Why have any more than the dangerous amount of knowledge.

ITALY
Inter Milan won the big Milan derby last weekend to lead the Serie A table just ahead of surprise packets Chievo. The biggest surprise is the best team from Turin is Torino (4th) and not Juventus who sit all the way down in 16th, only ahead of the three promoted teams and Empoli. It’s only three games old and 2nd to 9th are just a point apart, so many more stories to be told. Well timed is the fixture list where all of the top 4 teams play each other this weekend.

HIGHLIGHTS
CHIEVO v INTER MILAN
TORINO v SAMPDORIA

FRANCE
PSG remain undefeated but could only draw on the weekend, but they are still a cut above the rest of the league as the only unbeaten team after 5 rounds. Another League title looks at their mercy with their expensive roster. Some different names currently sit in the top half, so that is refreshing for a change. Teams like Stade Rennais (2nd), Stade de Reims (3rd) and Angers (7th).

HIGHLIGHTS
MARSEILLE v LYON

GERMANY
The Bayern Munich League has more than one team to watch at the top this year as thankfully Borussia Dortmund have started the season off as equally perfect as Bayern Munich. An improvement on last year’s start that saw them in the bottom three for a while. It may be worth keeping an eye on this league again. Borussia Monchengladbach are struggling on 0 points from 4 games and could have the lowest league points for any team in the Champions League this season.

HIGHLIGHTS
BORUSSIA DORTMUND v BAYER LEVERKUSEN
BORUSSIAN MONCHENGLADBACH v KOLN

SPAIN
Ronaldo is back on form with a lazy 5 last weekend and another 3 in the Champions League this morning, and despite his arrogant unlikeability you can’t argue against the supreme talent that he is. Barcelona still have the outright league lead after the league’s only perfect start. Celta Vigo and Eibar continue to impress in the early stages. No doubt reality will kick in as the season gets longer, but them enjoy their time in the sun.

HIGHLIGHTS
EIBAR v ATLETICO MADRID
REAL SOCIEDAD v ESPANYOL
